The City is in possession of the new FEMA Flood Insurance maps with go into effect in March 2010.  The maps determine whether property owners must purchase flood insurance to protect themselves.  The maps define high risk, medium risk and low risk areas, based on the 100-year and 500-year flood events.
 
Residents have until January 15, 2010, to review the maps and if they believe there is a discrepancy concerning their property, they can appeal FEMA's decision.
 
All appeals must be received by FEMA no later than February 6, 2010.
 
Once maps go into effect, all properties that lie in a floodplain will receive notice from either their bank or insurance company stating they must purchase flood insurance.
